Space & Time No. 117 Fall 2012
Step back into the strange worlds of Space & Time with Issue No. 117, originally published in Fall 2012—a wonderfully eclectic collection of science fiction, fantasy, horror, poetry, and the genre-bending work that has defined the magazine for generations.
Edited by Hildy Silverman, then Editor-in-Chief of Space & Time.
The fiction begins with Michael Penncavage’s “The Matter Concerning Mr. Symmes and the Hollow World,” an alternate-history adventure inspired by the real-life Hollow Earth theories of John Cleves Symmes. From there, the issue travels from the Underworld to the end of the world with Amanda Pillar’s “The Deal,” George Galuschak’s award-winning “Society of Dead Milkmen,” Erin M. Hartshorn’s “A Pretty Bauble,” Tim W. Burke’s “Flim-Flamming the Haints,” and Karen Wester Newton’s “Cold Comfort.”
Beyond the fiction, film critic Daniel M. Kimmel explores that deliciously tricky intersection between screams and laughter in “Scary but Funny,” looking at the balancing act behind horror-comedy favorites including Ghostbusters, Gremlins, Galaxy Quest, Shaun of the Dead, and Zombieland.
The issue also features speculative poetry from W.C. Roberts, Jason Sturner, James S. Dorr, Danny Adams, Alexandra Seidel, John M. Edwards, David Sklar, Stephen M. Wilson, B.Z. Niditch, and G.O. Clark.
With cover art by Donato Giancola, Issue No. 117 captures Space & Time doing what it does best: bringing together the eerie, imaginative, funny, unsettling, and unexpected under one cover.
