Edited by Hildy Silverman, then Editor-in-Chief of Space & Time, this vintage Summer/Fall 2013 issue launches with Kurt Newton’s “Nikola Tesla and the Resonating Frequency Transmitter,” sending the legendary inventor up Pikes Peak for an experiment that receives something far stranger than a signal from France.

Christopher DeFilippis turns a futuristic highway into a brutal, surreal battleground in “The Punk Meets the Godfather,” while Paige E. Ewing’s “Flyboy” pairs a mysterious woman who belongs to the air with a military test pilot whose experimental technology finally lets someone fly beside her. Yeoryios Pantazis takes readers into an ancient-world brothel where beauty and power conceal something supernatural, with additional fiction from Chet Gottfried, Todd Austin Hunt, and Dawn Lloyd.

The issue also features speculative poetry from Jeff Jeppesen, Daniel Ausema, Chrissa Sandlin, Robert Franz, Neil Weston, J. J. Steinfeld, Jill Bauman, Leonard H. Roller, Pedro Iniguez, David Barber, Jennifer Juneau, Steve Newton, and WC Roberts, plus Linda D. Addison’s “Word Ninja” and a substantial interview with Timothy Zahn, “Father of the Star Wars Expanded Universe Novels.”

There’s a little publishing history tucked into #119 as well: in her Editor’s Geeble, Silverman explains the economic pressures facing print magazines and announces Space & Time’s move from four issues a year to three—a snapshot of an independent speculative magazine adapting to a rapidly changing publishing world while fighting to remain in print.

Packed with mad science, impossible flight, ancient mysteries, dystopian spectacle, poetry, original artwork, and a glimpse behind the curtain of independent publishing, Space & Time No. 119 captures the magazine doing what it has done for generations: giving strange ideas room to become unforgettable stories.
