Edited by Hildy Silverman, then Editor-in-Chief of Space & Time, this vintage Spring 2014 issue ventures through dark fantasy, science fiction, horror, humor, and the wonderfully unexpected.

Inside, John Bowker serves up culinary horror with a mythological bite in “Old Meat,” Clare L. Deming plays havoc with physics and the direction of time in “A Big Stabbity Bang,” Jason Sturner uncovers a decades-old murder in “The Tramp Clown’s Secret,” and Matthew Fryer sends a fallen angel through one gloriously irreverent confrontation with Lucifer in “Scars.”

The issue also features Ferrett Steinmetz, Scott Pearson, Megan Maloney, poetry from Scott Green, Sharon Anderson, Charles Nelson, Ian Hunter, Walter Ruhlmann and K. L. Hasell, plus an interview with Catherine Asaro.

And tucked among those pages is a particularly special piece of Space & Time history: Nicky Drayden’s “The Simplest Equation,” an imaginative story about a struggling Stanford math student and her extraterrestrial classmate discovering that equations can tell stories. Five years after its original appearance here, the story was selected and performed by LeVar Burton for LeVar Burton Reads in August 2019; he returned to it again for an immersive remix in 2023.

Listen to LeVar Burton read "The Simplest Equation" by Nicky Drayden on Spotify or Apple Podcasts.

Issue No. 120 is a snapshot of Space & Time doing what it has always done best: finding strange voices, crossing genre boundaries, and publishing stories that sometimes travel much farther than anyone could have predicted.
