Two poets. Twenty-five shared prompts. Two completely different journeys into the dark.

Releasing January 19 in celebration of Edgar Allan Poe's birthday, Sisters Nevermore is an experimental Two Worlds, One Voice poetry flip book inspired by the haunted imagination of Edgar Allan Poe.

Poets Pixie Bruner and Angela Yuriko Smith begin with exactly the same creative conditions: the same central theme, the same 25 Poe-inspired topics, and no knowledge of what the other is writing.

Then they go their separate ways.

Drawing from Poe’s legacy of grief, obsession, beauty, terror, memory, madness, and the voices that refuse to stay buried, each poet independently creates a 25-poem chapbook. The experiment asks a deceptively simple question:

What happens when two writers are given the same creative map but allowed to find their own way through the darkness?

The answer becomes the book itself.

Sisters Nevermore is published as a dual-entry flip book. Pixie’s collection begins from one cover. Angela’s begins from the other. There is no conventional front or back and no prescribed place to start. Readers choose one voice, travel with it toward the center, then physically turn the book over to enter the same imaginative territory through another poet’s eyes.

The format transforms comparison into part of the reading experience. Twenty-five shared points of departure become two different interpretations that sometimes echo one another, sometimes diverge completely, and sometimes reveal unexpected connections neither poet could have planned.

We want the experimental format itself to be accessible to more readers, so Sisters Nevermore will also be available in large-print and dyslexia-friendly flip-book editions. We want to experiment with the book as an object while making sure the typography and reading experience remain as accessible as possible. These alternate editions will preserve the full two-poet, 25-prompt flip-book experience while offering readers additional ways to engage with the work.

Part gothic homage, part creative experiment, and part poetic conversation, Sisters Nevermore explores not only the enduring shadow of Edgar Allan Poe, but something larger about creativity itself:

Give two poets the same haunted house, and they will never encounter the same ghosts.

Two poets.

Two perspectives.

Twenty-five shared doors.

One darkness.

Angela Yuriko Smith is a two-time Bram Stoker Award-winning author, editor, educator, and publisher, and a former president of the Horror Writers Association. She believes the world is a work in progress. Writers are here to shape what comes next.
